Pink Panther Bandit Strikes AGAIN & Apple Smart Watch

The world has waited with baited breath for new technology that might, just maybe change the way we wear and buy jewelry.  Apple has released images and design of their newest gadget for any tech savvy loving person. So far the watch is available in 3 different models. The Apple Watch Sport, the Apple Watch, and the Apple Watch Edition. All three offer both 38mm and 42mm rectangular case sizing options, but the materials and finishes vary by collection, as do the band options offered by default.  The wait list for the watch begins on April 24th and the price varies from $349 to $10,000. Leave it to Apple to always create a buzz and a desire or need for new technology. The Watch Edition uses the same sapphire crystal to protect its screen, but it comes in either rose or yellow 18-karat gold, which is partly the reason for the higher cost. The Watch Edition also offers exclusive strap options, including leather bands and sport bands with special 18-karat gold hardware in finishes matching the case of each watch model.

The watch features for this watch include various faces with customizable colors and detail views. You will have the ability to send a tweet, Instagram, call someone from your contacts, directly from the watch. Look at appointments, maps and many more.

Apple isnt the first to create and produce a smart watch, but it'll be interesting to see if these become mainstream and how they can affect drivers, no cellphone during driving in California and New York. But what about a Smart Watch?

The Apple iWatch comes n a variety of colors and materials

Jewel heist in France leaves two cars burned and millions in euros of jewelry, gone

The large sized trucks were carrying millions of euros in jewelry

An armed guard stands where the raid happened
In the world of gems and expensive jewelry security is always a major concern, especially when expensive pieces of jewelry are being transported.  An unfortunate incident occurred on the A6 highway at the M-way toll booth on the A6 near Auxerre, 125 miles south-east of Paris. A group of 15 assailants wielding machine guns attacked two vans carrying millions of euros worth of jewelry, forced the drivers after spraying them in the face with a kind of gas, then they took off with the two vans. The vans were later found in the woods by police, abandoned and had been set on fire. No one was injured in the attack and the jewels are still missing. The incident was captured on CCTV. This heist was performed with military precision, all of the gang members were holding guns and not one gun was fired. There is talk that is the famous Pink Panther bandits, striking again.

Members of this gang are said to speak several languages and travel on genuine passports that have been issued to other people, but with the photos changed.  Interpol believes that many of the members are ex soldiers from Serbia.

They have carried out more than 100 raids across the globe, including further thefts in London, as well as in Dubai, Geneva, Monaco and Tokyo, but France is main target with the heists has been France.

Eight people were jailed last month for a theft that happened at Harry Winston in 2008. They had dressed up as women wearing wigs~

This heist is reminiscent of the a burglary that had occurred in 2013 in Cannes where an armed gunman walked into a jewel show at the Carlton International Hotel and left with $136 Million dollars worth of jewels then disappeared down a side street. No one associated with either crime has been found.

Slowly but surly with a crime gang of this size one misstep by a person and like a house of cards, it can all come tumbling down~

Red Carpet Jewelry Wrap Up~

Jewelry that is paraded down the red carpet and is viewed by millions and millions around the world, and goodness was it spectacular this year!  One of our favorites was Scarlett Johansen. Being a first time mom and showing of her incredible figure (and daring new hair cut) she absolutley shined in emeralds and diamonds. Scarletts Piaget Mediterranean Garden ear cuff was made from pink gold with five pear-shaped emeralds, 278 brilliant-cut diamonds, four pear-shaped aquamarines and two pear-shaped green tourmalines. Her statement making collar necklace was actually part of the dress and was created with swarovski crystals. Her Versace Aetelier green dress was superb and showcased her post baby body~
Scarlett in dress and collar necklace combo~
Margot Robbie ( she rose to fame being featured alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in "The  Wolf of Wall Street") was stunning in a black chiffon long dress by the late Yves Saint Laurent that was accented with jewelry on loan of royal descent. Margot was fortunate to wear a necklace that was created especially for the Duchess of Windsor by Van Cleef and Arpels. The Duchess had suggested to firm’s artistic director Renée Puissant (daughter of one of the principals Alfred Van Cleef) around 1938. Van Cleef had created the necklace that when zipped it is also functional as a bracelet. It took them 12 year to master the art of the zipper functioning. The necklace features 120 diamonds and 300 sapphires in 18k gold. It took 600 man hours to create this one piece and is valued at $1.5 Million dollars. What a sensational and historic piece of jewelry~

Unzipped as a necklace

Can also be worn as a bracelet
Jennifer Hudson wowed the crowds in a canary yellow dress by Romona Keveza dress and 150 carats of Colombian Emeralds and canary diamonds by famed jeweler Lorraine Schwartz.

Gwyneth Paltrow looked sensational in a pink column dress by Ralph & Russo. It was reminiscent of the pink Ralph Lauren dress she had worn in 1999 when she received an Oscar for her role "Shakespeare in Love".  She wore substantial sized Fire Phoenix earrings by Anna Hu Hauk Joaillerie (she's a former GIA alum!) . Featuring two pear shaped cabochon rubellites weighing 101 carats and two pear shaped cabochon rubellites weighing 22.88cts set with yellow and white diamonds, blue pink and purple sapphires, spinels, pariba tourmalines set in white gold. These have to be my favorite pair of earrings at the Oscars. Her ring also featured a oval shaped rubellite surrounded by pink and diamonds, also by Anna Hu and is called, "Petales d' Amour".

Beautiful combo with the pale pink and fierce color of the rubellites
The jewels completed her dress amazingly~
Naomi watts had also worn jewels by Anna Hu Hauk. Her sapphire earrings featured oval sapphires weighing over 50cts, purple sapphires and round brilliant cut diamonds
set in white gold worth $3,000,000.  The bracelet which was inspired by the Duchess of Windsor, features 5-baguette cut white diamonds weighing over 10cts with 380 brilliant cut white diamonds all set in white gold.A stunning suite of jewelry!

The intense color of her sapphire earrings were incredible~
Cate Blanchett is always on the cutting edge of fashion and this time she went with a classic black dress by John Galliano for Maison Margiel. She paired this dress with a stunning blue turquoise and diamond collar necklace by Tiffany & Co. With up swept hair, good skin and subtle makeup, it was an exceptional red carpet look.

Superb combination with the black velvet dress

Anna Wintour in not one, but two stunning necklaces~
Anna Wintour forever stylish with her Parisian Bob, looked impeccable in a pale pink dress accented not with one but two stellar necklaces. She usually chooses Georgian necklaces (necklaces created with large gemstones in gold settings) for many front row fashion shows. Her large aquamarine and diamond necklace  was paired with a vintage rose cut diamond necklace. No word on the dress designer or jeweler. And yes, she wore her glasses inside at the Oscars~

Vanity Fairs party after the Oscars is never to be missed by any winner or un winner from the Oscars. Beyonce wore a Stella McCartney Crepe backless dress, paired with the largest round dia0nd choker and massive emerald and diamond rings,  all by Lorraine Schwartz. Bigger is always better, especially with gems!

Her emerald and diamond rings were fascinatingly huge!

The diamond necklace is stellar~
The Oscars wasnt the only place where statement pieces were found, the Grammys had a few recording artist that were wearing alot of sparkle! Lady Gaga was wearing a heavily beaded Brandon maxwell silver sequin dress. She added more opulence by wearing an incredible diamond and emerald drop necklace by Lorraine Schwartz necklace and earrings. No word on the worth but it has to be seven figures~

Incredible emerald and diamond jewelry by Lorraine Schwartz, love her eye makeup!

Beyonce always decked out in Lorraine Schwartz didnt fail to impress wearing over $10 Million worth of Colombian emerald earrings and rings. Wearing 3 large rings on each hand has become her red carpet look~

$5 Million Dollar Ring, Lauren Bacall Auction, French Monarch Jewels

Pink diamonds  have always held a long and interesting history~ Sothebys had an auction on  October 7th 2014 in Hong Kong titled "Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite". A 8.74cts pear shaped fancy intense pink diamond had garnered alot of attention and was estimated to sell $12.8 Million - $15.4Million.  So notably it was a possibility that this unnamed pink IF diamond could sell for more than the estimate (as it happen often). And it did! This magnificent diamond sold for an incredible jaw dropping price of  $17.7 Million dollars! It actually went over the original pre auction estimate by $2 Million dollars. The diamond was cut from the rough that weighed 19.54cts.

To give you a little history about another notable pink diamond that created a stir at auction was the 24.76cts Pink Graff, a fancy intense pink pear shaped diamond sold to Lawrence Graff, in Geneva in November 2010 for more than $46.1 million. The record price per carat for a fancy vivid pink diamond is more than $2.1 million per carat set by a 5-carat diamond sold in Hong Kong in January 2009 for more than $10.7 million.

This is what a $4.3 Million dollar ring looks like~
Jadeite has always been considered an important gem/mineral for people of Chinese culture have coveted.  the color and quality of these interesting stones is a difficult one to understand, kind of like Colombian Emeralds. Here is what the EGL says about Jade and the importance of the stone~

"The importance of Jade stone in Chinese culture is reflected in its status as a symbol of goodness, preciousness and beauty. To the Chinese, jade stone is also the embodiment of the Confucian virtues of courage, wisdom, modesty, justice and compassion. The polish and brilliance of jade stone is considered by the Chinese to be representative of purity while its compactness and hardness reflect intelligence. Justice is represented by its angles and the sound produced by it when it is struck is a symbol of music. The color of jade stone depicts loyalty while its flaws reflect sincerity. The Chinese also value jade stone because of its brightness; representing heaven, while its substance is representative of the earth."

The Sothebys Magnificent Jadeite and Gems Auction had amazing pieces of jadeite carvings and many items of jewelry. The most expensive item of jadeite that sold was a pair of jadeite and diamond earrings , called "Jadeite Peapod "for $933,056. ( Jadeite and Jade are the same thing~)

Jadeite Peapod earrings sold for $933,056

51.24cts Fancy Intense Yellow Diamond and Diamond Necklace Lot# 1940, did not sell pre auction estimate $1.5 Million - $1.8 Million

An excellent sapphire and diamond ring sold for an unprecedented $4.0 Million dollars.  It was one of two sapphire rings that actually broke world records for winning auction price per carat at $236,404.

An  exceptional and very rare sapphire and diamond ring pre auction estimate $2.8 Million - $3.6 Million 17.16-carat Kashmir sapphire & 6.0tcw diamond ring sold for $4.06 million ($236,404 per carat)

Lot # 1936, a 5.32tcw fine fancy vivid blue diamond ring sold for an incredible $5.3 Million dollars. The color of the diamond is gorgeous, and one not always seen. The blue diamond itself is IF (internally flawless) and weighs 2.32cts and the two trillions weigh 2.0tcw.

Fancy Vivid Blue Diamond and Diamond Ring sold for $5.3 Million dollars, pre auction estimate was $3.3 Million - $4.3 Million

Of 339 items listed for Auction only 239 found buyers. For this type of auction the percentage of not sold items seems a little high.

When historic sized or colored gems or piece of jewelry are on the agenda for an auction, auction lovers get excited.  The Feuilles de Groseillier brooch is historical piece of jewelry that has a long line of history will be auction at Christies in Geneva on November 11th 2014. It was commissioned by the French jewelers Bapst in 1855. Of the French monarch jewelry, very little is left to this date.

Feuilles de Groseillier brooch
This brooch hasn't been seen at an auction for 125 years. the historic jewel is estimated to sell at $2 Million - 3 Million dollars.

The French Royal jewels that were auctioned in 1887 after Napoloen III was over thrown. The brooch was one part pf the parure.Jewelry houses  Tiffanys, Garrard and Bapst purchased a majority of the lots.

The French jewels that were auctioned in 1887, and an explanation to what happened to them after the auction is unknown.  Usually when jewelry is handed down for generations the prices are kept in tact. Or a sad possibility is that they could of been dismantled and then sold.

While on the topic of  auctions Laureen Bacall, a screen actress that made countless classic movies with Humphrey Bogart ( who eventually became her husband, their screen chemistry was sizzling) had passed away in august 12th at the age of 89, it was a question as to when her personal items would come to an auction house. Bonhams auction house that is headquartered in London is auction her impressive 700 item art collection in March of 2015. She began purchasing Henry Moores items in 1950 and owned 8 of his sculptures. There are only a few pieces of jewelry that will be in this auction.  the pre sale estimate if $3.0 Million Dollars.  She did have a clause in her will ( she left money for her 3 adult children and her little dog, Sophie) that stated, 'I request that my children respect my wish to keep private certain personal letters, writings, diaries and other papers or memorabilia,' she wrote in her will.  Which is refreshing, who wants to know every detail about a movie stars life?

A true stunner, at 19!
But with the extent of her art, its possible that the pre auction estimate price could go higher.  I think its always interesting how celebrities decorate their homes and what art they like to collect. She was such an intensely private person, it'll be a treat to get a glimpse into this part of her life. Here's the link to the auction house, https://www.bonhams.com/press_release/17636/

Henry Moore's Maquette for Mother and Child: Arms- pre auction estimate between $150,000 and $200,000

On a side note, she had donated more than 700 garments ( from the 50's and 60's) to the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology  (in new York) before her death.  They are planning an exhibit in 2015, spring.  No actual date has been set yet. id be interested to see her clothes. She was always so elegant and is still to this day a source of inspiration to designers.  Here is a link to their website (looks like some great exhibits!) http://www.fitnyc.edu/museum.asp

Rachel Lambert "Bunny" Mellon was a well known name in the world of philanthropy and art, and horticulture. She had passed away in March 12, 2014 at the age of 103.   She came from great wealth and her husbands came from equally wealthy and aristocratic families. Her husbands net worth was in the billions. Art enthusiasts and collectors from around the world are getting ready for a large scale, 6 separate auctions happening at Sothebys in New York in November.  The items in the auction are in the 4,000 item mark, yes 4,000 items.  The sale will consist of jewelry by great designers of the 20th century, among them Cartier and Verdura; antique French, English and American furniture; and examples of rare porcelains.

She had kept all of her correspondence and didnt throw anything away, so that can explain so many treasured items that will be featured. The pre auction estimates are around $100 Million dollars. ( two of her Rothko paintings have already sold to private buyers for $250 Million dollars) Mark Rothko was an American painter of Russian descent that was an abstract expressionist painter. Bunny had come across his loft in New York and immediately purchased 13 of his paintings.

She was an extremely private person, who was very polite and gave few interviews.  The interviews she did give, the last one when she was 99.  The interviewer was always treated to warm and very hospitable visit. She would often invite the interviewers to her estate for lunch and a tour of the grounds. She had very few visitors to her beloved Oak Spring estate in Upperville, Virginia.

The Mellon sale is expected to provide a similarly rich visual history and a peek into the world of one of this country’s most private couples. Bunny designed the gatehouse to the couple’s property in Virginia and was known to have her own carpenter to build furniture of her own designs. Always loyal, Mrs. Mellon was dressed exclusively by Balenciaga until his retirement in 1968 and later only by Hubert de Givenchy.
